I was watching a BBC show recently which was discussing the top ten grossing songs of all time. The list was what you might expect, mostly christmas songs, some classic 1960’s tuns which have come of age with the baby boomers, and the full blossoming of the record business and royalties. Top of the pop is the universally known “Happy Birthday to you”.
The tunes themselves all deserve to be there, and those who wrote them were certainly inspired when they did, one particular tune, Yesterday was downloaded to Paul McCartney as he awakened from a dream one morning on a Beatles tour of France. It was fully formed, albeit with different lyrics (Scrambled Eggs?). Macca himself said that he felt like he didn’t write it, he received it from someone else. Most of the really good songs are written this way, in a matter of minutes. Where did it come from? From his inspired subconscious.
